The GOP establishment is now in a full-on panic over Donald Trump, enough so that Lindsey Graham and now Jeb! Bush among many other have endorsed Ted Cruz. It’s an orgy of “strange bedfellows” among the #NeverTrump movement.
Like most GOP efforts, this one will almost certainly fail, and GOP insiders will then have to decide whether to cook the convention, undermine primary voters across the country, and risk a GOP civil war.
The GOP is right to panic. A nomination of Trump would destroy, not unify the GOP, and Trump would not just the deliver the White House to Hillary Clinton but drag down congressional candidates. The same is true of any Mitt-Jeb!-McCain-like candidate who’s anointed by GOP insiders to steal the nomination.
The GOP has no good options left, and to make matters more painful for them, Hillary Clinton is a really bad, beatable candidate: corrupt, tiresome, lugging decades of baggage, and repulsive. And that doesn’t really count the fact that she should (and may) be indicted.
Call it schadenfreude, but whatever hell storm of misery the GOP leadership sees over the next 4 years it’s well-deserved. Whatever anyone thinks of the Tea Party, the fact is that the GOP told them they’d govern like conservatives, won back the House and Senate, then repeatedly caved to President Obama, and exposed themselves as spineless liars.
With Republicans like this, who needs Democrats?
Trump owes his success to the GOP’s failures. After being duped for a few election cycle, conservatives are so angry that they’re willing to hold their nose and support Trump. In fact, if the GOP had cared nearly as much about leadership as it does now about stopping Donald Trump, they’d never have had to #neverTrump.
2016 may or may not be the end for the GOP. But it’s sure going to be painful.
